Roderick Cox Music Initiative
Empowering young musicians to change the face of classical music
“To me, being a RCMI fellow means that I have no limits when it comes to music, which makes me feel incredible.” Kamau (15)
Shaping the Future of Classical Music
The Roderick Cox Music Initiative (RCMI), now proudly stewarded by Walker West Music Academy starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, is dedicated to empowering young orchestral musicians of color to become the next generation of classical music leaders. Founded by the visionary conductor Roderick Cox, alongside Dr. Yvonne Cheek, Anton Vincent, and Maurice Holloman, RCMI was born from a desire to break down barriers and create a more inclusive and dynamic future for classical music.
At its core, RCMI believes in providing these talented young artists with the tools and opportunities they need to not only excel as musicians but also to become catalysts for change within the classical music world. We are committed to fostering a future where classical music resonates with a broader audience and reflects the rich diversity of our society.

Current Students
Mukuhi N.
Affiliations: Kamoinge Strings, Minnesota Youth Symphony, Artaria Chamber Music School, Stringwood Music Festival, Credo Music Festival, Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music
“RCMI has given our children opportunities we could have never imagined — access to high-level, world-class private instruction, quality instruments, national and international summer programs, and most importantly, a safe space where music and social justice meet. Through this invaluable community institution, our children have found healing, purpose, and confidence. It has supported not only their musical growth but also their mental and emotional well-being, helping them find grounding and joy.” – Mukuhi’s Mother
Mukuhi started violin when she was in first grade at her local public school, but had to stop after only a couple of years when she moved with her family to Kenya. When her family returned to the United States, she resumed her music studies on the violin. It can be tough to start the violin after several years. Studying at Walker West allowed her not just to progress, but to excel on the instrument in ways she never imagined. She would eventually join the Minnesota Youth Symphonies, Artaria Chamber Music School, and Kamoinge Strings. Mukuhi is also a recipient of the Minnesota Schubert Club’s Promise Scholarship. In addition to playing the violin, Mukuhi enjoys reading, math, and photography.
Kamau R. (Violin and Viola)
Affiliations: Kamoinge Strings, Minnesota Youth Symphony, Artaria Chamber Music School, Stringwood Music Festival, Sphinx Performance Academy-Boston Conservatory, Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival
“To me, being a RCMI fellow means that I have no limits when it comes to music, which makes me feel incredible. I want to use classical music to connect with people from all walks of life and show them its power.”
Kamau started his studies as a violinist but eventually moved to the viola because of the deep resonance of the larger instrument. Playing the viola led to him attending summer chamber music study programs in Boston and Vermont. With a strong interest in exploring the future of classical music, Kamau hopes to pursue viola performance after high school. In addition to developing his technique on the viola, Kamau loves playing chamber music and theater.
Thomas B. (violin)
Affiliations: Kamoinge Strings, Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music
“RCMI’s support has been crucial in allowing me to focus on mastering the violin and pursue opportunities that will help me contribute to the future of classical music. It’s not just about playing the notes, but about shaping the direction of this art form.”
Thomas enjoys his violin and playing in various ensembles. He recently performed Dvořák’s American Quartet at a chamber music camp in New Hampshire. This was his first time playing in a string quartet. He also likes to improvise on his instrument, especially when performing jazz, a skill he developed as a member of Kamoinge Strings. He is working on challenging his repertoire and is determined to excel as a musician, while recognizing the transformative power of classical music. In his spare time, Thomas loves to read, take photos, and play soccer.
Keziah F. (Violin)
Affiliations: Kamoinge Strings, Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music
“RCMI has provided me with a variety of experiences with Kamoinge, my school orchestra, GTCYS, summer study programs, and solo performances—so many opportunities and ways in which to play the violin and create community. I can’t imagine any one of these experiences without my friends. RCMI has shown me that classical music is a living, breathing art form that I can be a part of shaping. I want to use my music to tell stories and connect with people on a deep level.”

Rahel H. (Violin)

University of Minnesota| Walker West Founders’ Award
“RCMI is helping me to not only hone my skills but also to find the confidence to truly make an impact with my music. I want to inspire others through classical music.”
Inspired by her older sisters (all play violin or viola), Rahel began violin at an early age. Within a few years, she was playing with the Minnesota Youth Symphonies, participating for a remarkable 8 years! As an RCMI Fellow, Rahel has had opportunities to participate in prestigious programs like the Artaria Chamber Music School, Stringwood Chamber Music Festival, and the Credo Music Festival in Chicago. As she considers her post-high school plans, Rahel has many options, including violin performance. Her goal is to gain increased confidence to pursue her passion for classical music. In addition to violin, Rahel is an accomplished flutist and enjoys politics.
Wacheke N. (violin)
Affiliations: Kamoinge Strings, Minnesota Youth Symphonies
University of St. Thomas – Biomedical Engineering + University Symphony Orchestra | Walker West Founders Award
“Classical music has the power to create deep connections and understanding. RCMI has given me the tools to share this with others and to find my voice within this rich tradition.”
Wacheke is a dedicated violinist who is pursuing a minor in music alongside her studies in biomedical engineering. A recipient of the Walker West Founders’ Award, Wacheke actively explores diverse musical opportunities, demonstrating her leadership and commitment to both her musical and academic passions. Her varied musical engagements include soloing with a women’s swing band and performing in jazz jam sessions. She plans to stay connected with Kamoinge Strings while in college and aims to bring her unique perspective to the world of classical performance.
Ream H. (Violin)
Affiliations: Kamoinge Strings, Minnesota Youth Symphonies
University of St. Thomas – Biology, Music Education | Walker West Founders Award
“RCMI helped in my music studies by allowing me to focus more on improving and practicing without having to worry about the expenses of things like a new bow or any other expenses that come with playing the violin.”
Ream is a multifaceted musician who not only plays violin but has dabbled with other orchestral instruments. She plays the trombone, French horn, and percussion, all while progressing with the violin. Now at university, she continues to study the violin and piano while participating in her school’s symphony orchestra and chamber music opportunities. These activities are pursued while pursuing a degree in biology. Even with such a busy schedule, Ream still participates in Kamoinge Strings as an alumna and often coordinates “gig” projects with the “Ladies of Kamoinge Strings”, a subset of the current and alum female players of the ensemble who perform for special events.
About the Program
Empowering Through Scholarships
RCMI scholarships are essential in providing access to high-quality music education, enabling students to focus on developing their artistry and pursuing their passion for orchestral music. By covering costs for private lessons, advanced training from dedicated and skilled teachers, instrument acquisition and maintenance, and participation in enriching summer programs, these scholarships remove obstacles that might otherwise prevent these talented musicians from reaching their full potential.
Guided by Visionary Mentorship
The Stage as a Classroom
Performance is integral to a musician’s development, and RCMI fellows have access to a rich array of opportunities. From the prestigious Minnesota Youth Symphonies and Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies to the dynamic ensemble Kamoinge Strings at Walker|West, these experiences build confidence, refine skills, and create lasting memories. Performing in orchestras, ensembles, and solo opportunities, our young musicians gain confidence and hone their skills. This platform allows them to share their artistry and inspire a deeper appreciation for classical music.

The Roderick Cox Music Initiative is more than a scholarship program; it is a movement.
