Our Grand Opening: A Celebration of Music, Community, and Legacy!

The air was filled with joy and excitement as we celebrated the Grand Opening of Walker|West Music Academy on Friday, April 25th and Saturday, April 26th!

It was a momentous occasion, bringing together founders, community leaders, dedicated staff, talented teaching artists and musicians, passionate students and families, and enthusiastic supporters.

A Memorable Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The official ribbon cutting was a truly special event, emceed with infectious energy by the talented T. Mychael Rambo. We were honored to have several distinguished speakers join us, including Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, City Councilwoman Anika Bowie, and Ramsey County Commissioner Rena Moran, all of whom shared their heartfelt support for Walker West’s mission. Walker|West Executive Director Braxton Haulcy thanked supporters and spoke about the academy’s vision for the future, while founders Rev. Carl Walker and Grant West reflected on the journey and impact of Walker|West over the years. Adding to the significance of the day, Representative Samakab Hussein presented Rev. Walker and Grant West with an Honorary Certificate of Recognition for their remarkable contributions to the community. While Senator Sandra Pappas was unable to attend as scheduled, her support for Walker|West remains invaluable.

The ceremony was a resounding success, attended by approximately 300 people who cheered as the ribbon was cut, symbolizing the official opening of this new chapter. The Walker|West Brass Ensemble and Kamoinge Strings provided extraordinary music for the evening.

A Smashingly Successful Open House

The celebration continued into Saturday, April 26th, with an intergenerational Open House that drew around 1000 people to Walker|West between 10 am and 8 pm! The day was a vibrant showcase of the diverse talents within the Walker West community. Attendees were treated to captivating performances by engaging adult and youth jazz ensembles, the uplifting Amazing Grace Chorus, a dynamic performance by Black Note, and a recital for strings students in the evening. In the afternoon, DJ Yasmeenah and Mickey Breeze kept the rhythms going for our guests outside the building.

Beyond the musical performances, the Open House offered a variety of engaging activities for all ages:

  • Homies in Harmony: Our youngest community members had an energetic class with Auntie Jayanthi and experienced special reading of founder Rev. Walker’s book.
  • African Drumming: Participants experienced the rhythmic energy of African drumming circles.
  • Building Design Presentation: Guests gained insights into the beautiful new facility during a presentation with the building’s architect and interior designer.
  • Instrument Experimentation: Aspiring musicians of all ages had the opportunity to try out different instruments.
  • Songwriting and Recording: Visitors got a glimpse into the creative process in our state-of-the-art recording studio.
  • Beat Making in the Digital Music Lab: The digital music lab buzzed with activity as participants explored the world of beat making.

Don’t let the music stop.

Due to rising economic pressures and the disruption caused by immigration enforcement activity in the Twin Cities, some of our families are facing a financial gap that threatens their music education this semester.
