The Beat and the Ball: Celebrating Art, Athletics, and Activism
On February 27, 2026, the halls of Walker West Music Academy were filled with a unique synergy as we hosted “The Beat and the Ball.” Hosted in partnership with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx, and supported by the NBA Foundation, this signature Black History Month celebration highlighted the powerful intersection of music, sport, and social change.
The evening was more than just a celebration; it was a profound investment in the next generation of Twin Cities youth and a testament to the healing and growth that happens when our community gathers to explore and perform.
A Night of Reflective Celebration
The program opened with a stirring original poem by Marie Chanté, setting an inspiring tone of cultural pride that carried through the entire evening. Our MC, Jacelyn P. Johnson, guided us through a journey that honored the ancestral drum and the deep legacy of Walker West.
One of the most impactful segments was a student-led discussion. Zantavious Graham, a leader from our Digital Music Production (DMP) program, moderated a conversation featuring influential voices like musician and Lynx in-arena host BdotCroc and Grammy-nominated artists Stokley and Allan Kingdom. They shared heartfelt insights on creativity, leadership, and how culture and sport walk the same path toward empowerment.
Student-Led, Community-Centered
The heartbeat of the event was found in the talent and dedication of our students. We were privileged to host live performances by:
- The Ujamaa Men
- Kamoinge Strings
- The Black Notes
- DMP Open Lab Students
The energy in the room provided a much-needed sense of “spiritual upliftment.” For students like Victor, the day was a source of immense pride, while Tiago described it as an “eye-opening experience” that deepened his understanding of Black history. Even our elders, including W. Rayford Johnson, shared the pride of seeing the legacy of our founders continue through such disciplined and talented youth.
With Gratitude to Our Partners
Building a vibrant community is a team effort. We want to extend a warm and appreciative thank you to the partners who helped make this event a reality:
- The Minnesota Timberwolves & Lynx: Thank you for the official team jerseys and your continued investment in the Twin Cities.
- NBA Foundation: Thank you for your dedication to driving economic opportunity for our youth.
- Local Black-Owned Brands: We were proud to feature swag bags from Lip Esteem, The B.E.Z.T. Bakery, Black Garnet Books, and SoulGrain.
As our teaching artist and Technical Director Solomon Parham says, we are truly “in tune with the future!”
